Abiqui, New Mexico
Abiqui, NM
We spent three nights at a lovely Air BnB in a small town in New Mexico called, Abiqui. The Air BnB was one of the first things Leo had booked for our trip once we knew we were heading out on a Southwest road trip. What caught his eye was that there were mini donkeys, alpacas and a beautiful horse named Buster. Turned out that it was an awesome stop for the family filled with animals, interesting chats with the host Jeff, hot tub under the sparkling night sky, fresh eggs and home roasted coffee.
The kids spent almost every waking moment out in the paddock with the animals, Buster the horse, the mini donkeys, Shawnee, Lolita and Sunny, and the two alpacas Cooper and Forest.
The owner/host Jeff, was incredibly kind and hospitable. He let the kids help with the feeding and grooming and care of the animals. Vios and Luna were in heaven.
We also found little pockets of snow left from the first snow fall the prior week. You would have thought we had never played with snow before. We had an epic snowball fight among the cacti and sagebrush. Not the usual scenery for our snowball battles.
Abiqui is in the area that Georgia O’Keefe lived out the latter half of her life. Many of her famous paintings were inspired by the landscape of this part of the world. We hiked up to Chimney Rock which gave us a view of the surrounding landscape. Apparently, O’Keefe’s ashes are scattered up there.
We enjoyed the hike and I enjoyed learning a bit about O’Keefe, but overall the memory of this stop was the animals and the comfortable casita.
